DALLAS, July 1, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — As temperatures continue to soar this summer to highs of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, many Americans are running to air-conditioned spaces. According to the National Weather Service, the dangerous heat that has been persistent in the Northwest and throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast part of the United States will continue. Because of this record-breaking heat wave, many parts of the country are stocking up on AC window units to combat the high temperatures in their homes. And, while it’s important to be cool in the home, it’s also important to remain cool inside a vehicle. For aging vehicles, this means stocking up on refrigerant for the car.

According to a July 21, 2021 article in the Wall Street Journal (Colias, M., Americans Are Keeping Their Cars Longer, as Vehicle Age Hits 12 Years), American’s are keeping their cars a lot longer, with the average age increasing to 12.1 years.

“As cars age, so do their parts. With record temperatures and automobiles exceeding 12 years of age, air conditioning systems will start to give out, since much of a car’s system is made of rubber. Rubber O-rings, gaskets, grommets, hoses and other parts tend to degrade over time with exposure to heat, humidity and seasonal environmental changes. As that happens, the rubber parts start to harden, crack and fail. Those failures can cause loss of refrigerant in your AC system and make an already difficult 110+ degree day dangerous for drivers,” said Alex Kuo of AC Technologies Corporation.

Why is refrigerant important? According to Kuo, refrigerant is used in your car to help cool the cabin temperature. “When you have too little refrigerant, there is not enough pressure differential between the high and low pressure to create that cooling effect as there is not enough pressure in the system. Alternatively, when there is too much refrigerant, there also isn’t enough pressure differential to create that cooling effect as there is too much pressure in the system. It is important to have the right amount of refrigerant in your system to operate efficiently to cool your vehicle,” said Kuo.

“A DIY tool like Mister Freeze can help keep your car cool this summer. It uses Accufill® technology to measure the air temperature coming from your vents and not pressure which can differ from vehicle to vehicle. Other than safety gear such as glasses and gloves, there are no special tools required to recharge your AC system with Mister Freeze,” said Kuo.
